I tried many different things, but I had the greatest success with SD Fix and Malwarebytes. I lost a whole day of my life dealing with it. Register now! The bad thing is though, these programs get on your machine, then they might want you to buy something to get rid of it. Have I botched up the removal process ? When you say change ther registry keys, does that just mean renaming them or what? Even if fully updated it doesn't even see the infection. The registry is also modified so the software runs at system startup. As soon as I clicked on the site my machine became infected with "Antivirus XP 2008". It gets quicker and easier after that.   Just persist in using the free tools from legitimate sources.
