From other forums I've stumbled upon with this search suggest that vista 32 bit is a better shot than vista 64 or windows 7 64. there should be no sound at all. But the gist of it is many people noticed this problem started after July window updates for Windows 8 computers. Select Set up microphone. but for the sound drivers themselves under device manager, its Sound>High Definition Audio Device.
Mine was on the digital output device which had it wacked so I clicked on speakers ,apply, and okay and wah la my sound was magically working again. Someone else has likely dealt with this. Turns out my playback options had switched which was really stupid so this is what I did. Great laptop if you can get Windows 7 features to work but Vista 64bit was a real boat anchor requiring constant fixes.

step: unnistal old version of launch manager in your pc 2. Go to where u can uninstall programs and you should see a link that says updates or recent updates. I have installed both of the drivers you suggested. gives a red sign on bottom of slider. First off, XP was having speaker issues too but of a different sort when I booted there this morning.

Thanks in advance. They didn't do anything for me so they were uninstalled too. Reinstall the Operating System. On the laptop, there is a media controller thingy on the right side of the keyboard (http://www.gamecity.at/dge/notebooks/Acer/Images/acer_a...) - pic related.
Restore system and file settings from a known good date using System Restore. I am still trying to go through search results for "acer aspire 8730 launch manager vista 32". Right-click on the microphone and select Enable. My audio volume does not respond (or sometimes responds slightly) to a full sweep of my finger across the full audio bar.
